Yes! Dirty with a “u” because these are sooooo bad they’re good. There’s nothing refined or elegant about this week’s recipe. It’s an oldie I’ve been holding on to for quite some time… before I rejoined fat club!
It’s not pretty to look at, but it sure tastes good! It reminds me of being a kid, when the mothership once amazed me by putting cheese (yes, cheese!) inside eggy bread. Or French Toast as we called it.
I remember her telling me that her dad had used to make it for (maybe with) her, and so it seemed somewhat fitting for Father’s Day.
No matter what day it is, this is quick, tasty, and deeeeelicious!
A splash of milk
A splash or two of Worcestershire Sauce
I haven’t given quantities here – just use what you need for however many you’re trying to feed. As you can see, I made a Jenga tower which would’ve fed two or more as a satisfying snack, but had it all to myself in leu of an evening meal.
1. crack your eggs into a large bowl or non-metallic roasting dish. Add the milk and Worcestershire Sauce, and season well with salt & pepper. Whisk it all up like you would for scrambled egg.
2. Now take your bread. Spread some brown sauce on each slice, and make cheese sandwiches (with the saucy side inside!). I used sliced cheese – I’ll explain why in Tidy Tweaks!
3. Next soak the sandwiches in the egg mixture, making sure each one is well coated.
4. Heat a tablespoon of oil in a medium-hot frying pan, and fry the sandwiches for a few minutes on each side, until the egg is cooked, and the cheese has melted.
5. Serve immediately.
I’m so confused this week, as Sainsbury’s (you read that right) take first place at a lowly £5.29, quite a way ahead of ASDA in second with their £5.82.
Morrisons scoop third at £5.97, and it wasn’t a good week for Tesco in fourth, at £6.02.
Now – here’s one to consider – I used cheese slices, because I wanted to cook these as fingers (or French soldiers, maybe?). I didn’t want to lose all of the cheese into the mixture, as I feared would happen with grated cheese. In the end, there wasn’t quite enough egg to do it that way… I had to leave the edges “unsealed.” There’d be a second risk of losing cheese at the cooking stage, as you really would want to fry all surfaces, not just top and bottom! I did try this for the first few, and it worked reasonably well!
You could add some chilli flakes to the egg mix if you like, for a bit of heat. I generally do this with omelettes, but not scrambled eggs. I wanted a more tangy taste for this one.
There could be room for some onions and/or garlic in the middle. Or… make a breakfast of it by adding cooked bacon and some beans.
Not a fan of brown sauce? Leave it out! If you’re one of those crazy types, you could substituted it with Tomato Ketchup. Or hot sauce. Or Relish. Probably not mayo, though you could try. Branston Pickle could be a winner!
You could leave the cheese out if you wanted, but remember…. cheese makes a meal!
